Green Turtles……A Conservation Note
Green turtles usually nest during the night, but occasionally, a female dragging herself down the beach may be glimpsed in the early morning. The future of turtles, very heavily exploited until recent years, is slowly becoming a little brighter in Seychelles. Hawksbills were slaughtered for many years mainly for their shell, known as "tortoiseshell", which was converted into jewellery and other trinkets for sale to tourists, while greens were taken for their meat. In 1900, it was estimated that 12,000-15,000 turtles nested in the southern atolls of Seychelles but by 1980 this was reduced to only about 4,000. Today, the taking of turtles is prohibited. It is hoped that eventually with continued care and conservation measures to ensure successful and undisturbed breeding and egg laying, the decline of these magnificent creatures will be reversed.
